The loons (North America) or divers (United Kingdom and Ireland) are a group of aquatic birds found in many parts of North America and northern Eurasia. The loon is the size of a large duck or small goose, which it resembles in shape when swimming. Flying loons resemble a plump goose with a seagull's wings, relatively small in proportion to the bulky body. The bird holds its head pointing slightly upwards during swimming.
The eerie yodel of the Common Loon is a symbol of the wild North. The territorial call of the male loon can be heard from lakes across Canada to the very northern United States. Beyond the most northern states and Canada, Loons were not well known unil the movie On Golden Pond brought them into the American conscience.
