Our exquisite parrot nesting dolls are a set of five tropical birds with the outer one being a Leadbeater's cockatoo. The other birds in this set are an Amazon parrot, a macaw, a lory, and a female eclectus.
Hand made and hand painted in Russia by villagers, these were made using the traditional matryoshka techniques. Linden trees are hand cut and aged for 2-6 years before the crafting begins. The turner creates the largest doll possible from the piece of wood he has set upon the lathe. Contrary to popular myth, the smaller dolls are not carved from inside the larger ones, but rather from separate pieces of wood. The top and bottom are carved separately, but finished together to create a perfectly matched pair. The women paint what the men have carved. Each design is hand sketched and painted from the lightest color to the darkest. The final step is hand application of a high gloss lacquer to fix the paint.
Each set of dolls comes signed and placed in a cloth bag. The outer bird is 6" high.
